With the weather changing and getting colder at night...she probably took them to find shelter out of the wind and cold. As for food, you said you were nearby deep woods. There will be mice and moles a plenty for them to capture and eat. They are not above chowing down on bugs either. So don't despair yet hon. I know you did all you could for them.
